Venture Literary Sells Graphic Narrative of the U.S. Constitution to FSG

On April 2, 2007, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary sold the North American rights to Jonathan Hennessey and Aaron McConnell’s The U.S. Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation to Thomas LeBien at Hill & Wang/FSG—the same agency and publisher that gave the world the New York Times best-selling The 9/11 Report: A Graphic Adaptation.

As president Woodrow Wilson put it, “The Constitution of the United States is not a mere lawyers’ document. It is a vehicle of life, and its spirit is always the spirit of the age.” That has never been more true than in The U.S. Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation—a one-of-a-kind, illustrated rendering of our country’s founding document by the writing and illustrating team of Jonathan Hennessey and Aaron McConnell.

In these politically divisive yet epochal times, a working knowledge of the Constitution is all too often missing from the average American’s mental toolbox. Hennessey and McConnell manage to be informative, provocative, and whimsically offbeat all at the same time in this visual adaptation of the law of the land. The framers of the Constitution had faced fierce challenges from within and without. While bitter clashes between north and south and "federalist" and "anti-federalist" camps raged, the nations of Europe smelled blood in the water—and were just biding their time to divide and conquer the infant country. The U.S. Constitution: A Graphic Adaptation pays testament both to the framers' hard-won victories that held a nation together, as well as to the legacies of discord and injustice that still divide America today. Every article and amendment is brought to life and held up to the magnifying glass, making this truly a version of the Constitution just as fit for reference as it is for entertainment.

Jonathan Hennessey, a writer and "citizen-historian" from the New England town that was home to the first man to die in the cause of the American revolution, also is a professional reviewer of books for the film & television industry in Los Angeles. Aaron McConnell, a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, is the writer and illustrator of The Young PUPS, a new, ongoing comic book property and recent finalist in Dimestore Press’s “Small Press Idol” contest for emerging artists and producers in the field.
