Venture Literary Sells The Starvation Experiment of Dr. Ancel Keys to Free Press

On April 29, 2004, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary, representing Todd Tucker, sold the North American rights to The Starvation Experiment: Dr. Ancel Keys and the Men He Starved for Freedom to Liz Stein at Free Press.

In The Starvation Experiment, Tucker tells the unbelievable story of Dr. Keys, the thirty-six pacifist volunteers, and the hungry year they spent together beneath the barren bleachers of the University of Minnesota football stadium toward the end of World War II—all in the name of science. It is a narrative populated by fascinating characters: the dashing Dr. Keys, an atheist-scientist who was famous for inventing the K Ration before the study began; the idealistic Henry Scholberg, a follower of Gandhi, eager to put his pacifist beliefs into action; the brilliant Max Kampelman, a lonely Jewish pacifist who tried to reconcile his beliefs as Hitler attempted genocide on his kin. All of these men began the experiment with diverse but strongly held convictions. All of them would find their beliefs tested and transformed during twelve months of starvation.

Their story is a fascinating hinge of war, science, and religion, a story that raises questions beyond the physical and psychological effects of hunger that Keys was ostensibly trying to measure. How has the United States historically treated pacifists during wartime? What is the theology that dictates pacifism to these groups? Why have starving refugees become a hallmark of modern warfare? The Starvation Experiment will tell this amazing story to the general public for the first time, so that the world can weigh the sacrifices and compromises these men made for freedom.

Tucker has already interviewed all of the living members from the experiment, including the one-hundred-year-old Dr. Keys, who has given Tucker complete and unprecedented access to all of his files. Tucker is also the author of Notre Dame vs. the Klan (Loyola Press, Fall 2004), a brilliant historical narrative that tells the story of a 1924 riot that took place between the KKK and Notre Dame students.
