Venture Literary Sells A Bluffer’s Journey to Citadel Press

On December 19, 2002, Greg Dinkin of Venture Literary sold the rights to A Bluffer’s Journey: Winning Poker Play from an Ivy League Math Geek by Matt Matros to Bruce Bender of Citadel Press.

Most poker instruction books are pages of probability charts, hand rankings, tables of statistics, and lists of rules. In A Bluffer’s Journey, Matros teaches readers his tricks to winning at poker through his experiences on the felt. Readers will meet eccentric, opinionated, and generous poker players in addition to the cardsharps, angle-shooters, and outright cheats that make up this fascinating subculture. They’ll wake up with Matros for the Saturday morning tournaments at Foxwoods, which were more motivating than his classes at Yale. They’ll join him as he picks off a bluff by world champion Phil Hellmuth at the Tournament of Champions in Las Vegas. They’ll also suffer through a prolonged losing streak, where he watched months of hard work and profits disappear. In the end, the reader will be a poker player, even if he or she has never held a pair of aces.

Matt Matros is a math whiz turned gambler, who learned his craft at Yale and is now a force on the poker circuit–at Foxwoods, in Vegas, and online, where he earns more than enough to finance his M.F.A. at Sarah Lawrence.
