"No Kill Date"

Venture Literary Sells Celebrated Non-Fiction Author’s Debut Mystery Novel to Kensington Books

On February 1, 2007, Greg Dinkin of Venture Literary sold World Rights to the first novel by noted non-fiction poker specialist John Vorhaus to Richard Ember at Kensington Books.

Vorhaus’ book, Killer Poker: This Game Is Murder, represents a unique new blending of genres, the “how-to whodunit,” that combines murder mystery with teaching to bring readers to the highest level of understanding about tournament poker while pinning them to the edges of their seats.

This Game Is Murder tells the story of Hal Harris, a straitlaced young striver who’s never played poker before in his life. His brother, Guy, is a professional poker player, and when Guy dies, Hal inherits a tournament entry chip into the Poker Apocalypse, “the biggest poker tournament in history.” Realizing that the only way to unravel the mystery of Guy’s death is to plunge into this world, Hal will soon be scrambling for his life.

Described by CNN as “the sage of poker of our time,” Vorhaus has written six books in the Killer Poker non-fiction how-to series.
