Venture Literary Sells Freestyle Motocross Champion’s Memoir to ESPN Books

On January 15, 2007, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary—along with Steve Astephen—sold the rights to Travis Pastrana’s The Big Jump (with ESPN editor/writer Alyssa Roenigk) to Michael Solomon at ESPN Books.

Travis Pastrana, the most celebrated freestyle Motocross rider in the world, knows no limits. In 1999, he celebrated his first X Games gold medal by launching his bike into the San Francisco Bay. Three years later, he rode straight into the Grand Canyon—on purpose. At fourteen, he was the youngest world freestyle champion in history. At seventeen, he was the youngest Supercross racer ever to represent Team USA in the Motocross des Nations. At twenty-two, he landed the “impossible” double-backflip, which brought him yet another X Games gold medal—and certified his legend status. Two months later, he became the youngest American rally car champion in the sport’s long history. And this is just the beginning.

Spend five minutes in the presence of Pastrana, and his electricity grabs you. His confidence becomes your own. His effect on people is legendary. Spend five minutes within the pages of his book, and experience that same spark. Each chapter of The Big Jump builds toward another breathtaking accomplishment in Travis’ career and takes readers on a fuel-injected ride into the mind, heart, and soul of the greatest rider ever.

Travis Pastrana has been at the forefront of Motocross for more than a decade, even as he has explored and dominated new sports. Although his primary sport takes him around the world, he is most happy at home in Davidsonville, Maryland, where he’s never more than five minutes from Grandma’s house.

Alyssa Roenigk is an editor and writer at ESPN The Magazine. Her work covering action sports has led her into countless acts of recklessness, including long-jumping a go-kart into Pastrana’s foam pit. A Floridian at heart and a Pennsylvanian by birth, she lives in New York City but spends little time at home.
