Venture Literary Sells Michelle Wie Narrative to ESPN Books

On February 15, 2006, Greg Dinkin of Venture Literary sold the World rights to Eric Adelson’s untitled Michelle Wie narrative to Chris Raymond at ESPN Books.

She held a golf club at age four; she shot a 64 at age ten; she walloped the boys as a young teen; and she signed eight-figure deals with Nike and Sony at age fifteen. She’s got Bobby Fischer’s precocity, Michael Jordan’s “it” factor, Britney Spears’ pop appeal, and Tiger Woods’ potential. She will go down as one of history’s most well known golfers even if she never plays another hole. Michelle Wie is the golf world’s perfect storm, and Eric Adelson is the writer who knows her best.

Award-winning ESPN the Magazine writer Eric Adelson, who was the first journalist to pen a national story on Wie (when she was nine), will tell the story of a year in the life of the world’s most marketable female athlete, examining the young phenom’s effect on the world and the world’s effect on her. The year ahead will obviously change Michelle Wie, but it will also change the LPGA, the sport of golf, and sports as a whole. More simply, Michelle Wie is about to alter the sports landscape—and men and women can’t help but watch. Can she become the first woman ever to make the cut at a PGA tournament? Can she come closer to her dream of qualifying for the Masters? Can she cope with the spotlight?

Eric Adelson has written several feature stories on Wie for ESPN the Magazine, including the magazine’s Fifth Anniversary cover story on how Wie is changing the sports world. He has also written dozens of columns on ESPN.com about Wie and her impact. And he has made several appearances on ESPN television to comment on Wie, including “Five Good Minutes” on Pardon the Interruption.
