Venture Literary Sells Debut Novel to Dial Press

On January 31, 2007, Jennifer de la Fuente of Venture Literary sold the North American rights to Kyle Beachy’s debut novel, tentatively titled The Opposite of Blind, to Noah Eaker at Dial Press.

This novel tells the story of one summer in the life of Potter Mays. Back home in St. Louis after graduating from college, Potter is trying to figure out the rest of his life, with minimal success. The Opposite of Blind is that rare book that manages to be funny and poignant, sad and happy, profound and absurd, all at the same time. It is a post-modern romance that endorses the need for love, a critical and totally entertaining look at Middle America’s version of pop culture commercialism. It’s a moving portrait of a family’s history they can neither discuss nor escape. And ultimately it’s the story of how to grow up and the ongoing struggle to move forward through life’s many stages. The novel is reminiscent of Don DeLillo, Nick Hornby, and Haruki Murakami with a little bit of The Graduate thrown in—a mixture sure to intrigue readers young and old alike.

Beachy is a graduate of Pomona College and received his MFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where he now teaches writing. He was awarded a 2005 writer’s fellowship to The Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, has published short fiction in Otium, The2ndHand, and has a Featherproof Mini-book at www.featherproofbooks.com.
