Venture Literary Sells a Narrative About Joe Paterno and His Last Stand at Penn State to Gotham

On June 1, 2004, Greg Dinkin of Venture Literary, representing Frank Fitzpatrick, sold the World rights to The Lion in Autumn: Joe Paterno and Penn State Football to Brendan Cahill at Gotham.

The Lion in Autumn will be the definitive book on one of the greatest legends in sports history, and a brilliant, unprecedented look at the program he created in the isolated foothills of the Allegheny mountains.

As Paterno approaches the 2004 season—perhaps the most important in school history—he is haunted by three disturbing numbers: seventy-seven (his age), nine (Penn State’s 2003 losses, the most in school history), and eleven (the number of players arrested in the past year). Citing Paterno’s post-2000 record of 22-26, even his staunchest supporters have grown bolder in calling for the once unthinkable: a coaching change in Happy Valley. The stubborn coach, who has had at least one undefeated team in every decade, badly wants another. Will this be the season where the indomitable lion makes his last stand? Or will it be the season that the lion in autumn finally succumbs to the reality that the game has passed him by?

Regardless of what happens, there is no better author to capture this story than Frank Fitzpatrick, a journalist for the Philadelphia Inquirer and a longtime resident of Pennsylvania. Fitzpatrick is a Pulitzer Prize nominee, an APSE award winner, and the author of the critically acclaimed And the Walls Came Tumbling Down.
