Venture Literary Sells Pop Culture Book on Rock’s Quirkiest, Most Baffling Song Lyrics to Citadel Press

On May 7, 2004, Frank R. Scatoni, representing Brent Mann, sold the World rights to Blinded by the Lyrics: Behind the Lines of Rock and Roll’s Most Baffling Songs to Richard Ember at Citadel Press.

Leave it to Steve Miller to write the phrase "pompatus of love" into the lyrics of his song "The Joker." What in the world is a pompatus of love? Brent Mann sets out to elucidate this bizarre phrase—and hundreds of other enigmatic rock lyrics—in his newest book, Blinded by the Lyrics: Behind the Lines of Rock and Roll’s Most Baffling Songs. In it, readers will learn the fascinating, surprising, and seldom-heard stories behind the most mysterious and inscrutable lyrics in rock and roll history.

Mann puts the quirkiest, most fascinating, head-scratching lyrics from the ’60s through the ’90s under the pop culture microscope in this follow-up to his first book, 99 Red Balloons . . . and 100 Other All-Time Great One-Hit Wonders. If you’ve been wondering since 1982 what a "fried-out Kombie" is from Men at Work’s hit "Down Under," or what a "real estate novelist" is from Billy Joel’s famous tune "Piano Man," or what the Barenaked Ladies were trying to tell us with "Chickety China, the Chinese Chicken, you have a drumstick and your brain stops ticking," then you’ll finally get a full explanation within the pages of Blinded by the Lyrics.

Brent Mann is the author of 99 Red Balloons, which was published in November 2003 by Citadel Press. He’s a former disc jockey and comedian who has written material for Jay Leno’s Tonight Show and The National Lampoon magazine.
