Venture Literary sells Historical Narrative About "Hemingway’s Hurricane" to International Maine Press/McGraw-Hill

On May 26, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary sold the North American rights to Phil Scott’s Hemingway’s Hurricane to Tristram C. Coburn at International Marine Press/McGraw-Hill.

The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane was the strongest to hit the United States in the twentieth century, and in its path were hundreds of Great War veterans, who had been dispatched to the Keys to live in special tent cities erected by the FDR administration. In Hemingway’s Hurricane—so named because Ernest Hemingway took a strong interest in the disaster and was part of the relief force that tried to help the victims and survivors—critically acclaimed author Phil Scott looks back at the most powerful hurricane of the last century.

Scott chronicles each day—from Friday, August 30 through Saturday, September 7—as it happened: from the excitement of the veterans who were beginning their long holiday weekend through the terror, bravery, and sacrifice of the veterans left to fend for themselves during the storm. The book describes the aftermath, when the veterans crawled from their hiding places into a devastated world and when author Ernest Hemingway, who weathered the storm from his home in Key West, arrived in his boat Pilar to rescue his fellow veterans.

Phil Scott is the author of five books: The Shoulders of Giants, The Pioneers of Flight, Twenty-First Century Soldier, The Wrong Stuff, and the upcoming Deadly Things. The former managing editor of Flying and Omni magazines, Scott frequently contributes on a wide variety of topics to such magazines and newspapers as American History, Air & Space/Smithsonian, Scientific American, Popular Science, New Scientist, Reader’s Digest, the Chicago Tribune, Cigar Aficionado, and Boating.
