Venture Literary Sells Damon Runyon Baseball Anthology to Carroll & Graf

On September 22, 2004, Frank R. Scatoni of Venture Literary sold the North American rights to Jim Reisler’s anthology Guys, Dolls, and Curveballs: Damon Runyon on Baseball, to Nate Knaebel at Carroll & Graf.

For a decade or so in the early part of the twentieth century, when giants like Babe Ruth and Ty Cobb roamed the ballparks of America, Runyon wrote about baseball in a way that has never been matched. Runyon rewrote how the sport was covered and did so with a healthy, iconoclastic dose of humor and an eye for the kind of characters that would later make him famous.

In Guys, Dolls, and Curveballs: Damon Runyon on Baseball, critically acclaimed author Jim Reisler has captured the 124 columns and articles that comprise this first-ever anthology of Runyon’s best baseball pieces. Culled from microfilm and assembled with editorial context and the guidance of Damon Runyon’s family, Guys, Dolls, and Curveballs takes an irreverent, offbeat look at a great American writer—painting a portrait of a vanished time of American history.

A Pittsburgh native, Reisler has written for Sports Illustrated, Newsweek, The New York Times, and The New York Daily News. He is the author of Babe Ruth: Launching The Legend, Black Writers/Black Baseball, Babe Ruth Slept Here, Before They Were the Bombers, and Voices of the Oral Deaf.
